Why Tack Strips For Upholstery are Essential
As an experienced upholsterer, I can confidently say that tack strips are a crucial component in any upholstery project. These thin, rigid strips of metal or plastic may seem insignificant, but they play a vital role in achieving a professional and seamless finish.
First and foremost, tack strips provide the necessary structure and support for the fabric to be attached to the furniture frame. Without them, the fabric would wrinkle and sag, resulting in an unappealing and uncomfortable piece of furniture. Tack strips also help to create crisp edges and defined lines, giving the furniture a clean and polished look.
Moreover, tack strips make the upholstering process much easier and efficient. They act as guides for the fabric, ensuring that it is stretched evenly across the furniture. This helps to prevent any lumps or bumps from forming on the surface of the furniture, which can be challenging to fix once the fabric has been attached.
In addition to their functional benefits, tack strips also offer aesthetic advantages. They allow for a seamless transition between different fabrics or materials used on one piece of furniture. This is especially important when using patterned fabrics or when creating intricate designs with multiple fabrics.

My Buying Guide on ‘Tack Strips For Upholstery’
I have been in the upholstery business for over 10 years now and one of the most essential tools that I always have in my toolkit are tack strips. These small but mighty strips are crucial for achieving a professional and polished look in any upholstery project. In this guide, I will be sharing my personal experience and tips on how to choose the right tack strips for your upholstery needs.
What are Tack Strips?
Tack strips, also known as tacking strips or upholstery tack strips, are narrow strips of metal or plastic with sharp pins or tacks sticking out of one side. These pins or tacks are used to secure the fabric onto the frame of a piece of furniture, providing a clean and crisp edge.
Types of Tack Strips
There are two main types of tack strips – metal and plastic. Metal tack strips are more commonly used and come in various sizes and shapes such as straight, curved, and zigzag. Plastic tack strips, on the other hand, are usually used for lightweight fabrics or curved edges.
1. Metal Tack Strips
Metal tack strips are made from high-quality galvanized steel which makes them strong and durable. They come in different widths ranging from 1/2 inch to 1 inch and can be easily cut with scissors to fit any size or shape needed.
The most commonly used metal tack strip is the “zigzag” strip which has sharp tacks arranged in a zigzag pattern on one side. This type is perfect for straight edges and corners.
If you need to create curved edges or corners, I recommend using “curve-ease” metal tack strips which have flexible pins that can bend easily without breaking.
2. Plastic Tack Strips
Plastic tack strips are made from sturdy yet pliable plastic material which makes them perfect for lightweight fabrics such as vinyl or silk. They come in different shapes like straight, curved, and corner pieces to fit different upholstery needs.
The advantage of using plastic tack strips is that they do not rust like metal ones do, making them a great option for outdoor furniture or areas with high humidity levels.
Factors to Consider when Buying Tack Strips
- Type: Consider the type of furniture you will be working on and choose the appropriate type of tack strip accordingly – metal for heavy-duty fabrics/frames and plastic for lightweight fabrics/frames.
- Width: Choose a width that is suitable for your project. Wider widths provide more surface area to secure the fabric but may not work well with tight corners or curves.
- Flexibility: For curved edges/corners, opt for flexible metal curve-ease tack strips or plastic ones specifically designed for curves.
- Durability: Look for high-quality materials such as galvanized steel for metal tack strips and sturdy plastic material for plastic ones to ensure they last long without rusting or breaking easily.
- Pricing: Different brands offer different prices but do not compromise on quality just to save a few bucks. Choose reputable brands that offer good quality at reasonable prices.
Tips on Using Tack Strips
- Cut your desired length of tack strip using scissors (for metal) or a utility knife (for plastic).
- If using metal zigzag strip, make sure the tacks face upwards when attaching it onto your frame so that they catch onto the fabric easily when pulled downwards later on.
- To create neat corners with metal zigzag strip, cut small slits along each side where you want your corner to fold over before securing it onto the frame.
- If using curve-ease strip (metal), bend it into shape before attaching it onto your frame so it fits perfectly without any gaps when pulled down later on.
- To make sure your fabric stays in place while securing it onto the frame with tacks/pins, use a rubber mallet to lightly tap down along each edge as you go along.
- If you notice any loose threads while tapping down with mallet (which is common), use needle-nose pliers to pull them out before they get caught under tacks/pins.
- Last but not least – practice makes perfect! Don’t be discouraged if your first attempt doesn’t turn out perfectly – just keep trying until you get the hang of it!
In Conclusion
Tack strips may seem like small insignificant tools but they play an important role in achieving professional-looking upholstered furniture
